Another use for sour salt |

After a couple of weeks of use, my ceramic (Corningware) tea kettle acquires a significant coating of lime. This cannot be scrubbed off, no matter how hard I scrub and even if I use abrasive cleanser. And if the kettle has accidentally boiled dry, the lime is brown and ugly and still impossible to scrub off. But if i fill the kettle with hot tap water and a few tablespoons of sour salt and then put it on a burner with the heat on low, let it come to a boil, let it simmer for ten or fifteen minutes and then turn the heat off and let the kettle sit for a few hours, the lime is all dissolved. I then wash it with dishwashing detergent, rinse it well, and the surface of the ceramic kettle is left as smooth as if it were new. And if there's any lime left, I do this over again. I learned this from my grandmother. I've never used sour salt for anything else.
